NSW: Iemma calls for tougher sentencing
(EDS: Reissuing, clarifying timeframe of brawls in last par)
SYDNEY, Dec 11 AAP - NSW Premier Morris Iemma says he wants thugs who assault lifeguards
to face the maximum 25 years in jail.
Assault penalties under the Crimes Act range from two to 25 years, depending on the
offender's intent and the damage caused.
Mr Iemma says he wants the law amended so courts consider it an aggravating factor
if the assault victim is a volunteer.
"Those who selflessly give up their time to save people in distress on the beach should
not be considered easy targets by thugs and hooligans," Mr Iemma said in a statement.
"We are going to back them with extra protection that will ensure that judges take
into account their status in the community when sentencing."
Mr Iemma said the law will be amended when parliament resumes next year.
Riot police are today patrolling North Cronulla Beach, in Sydney's south, following
fears of violence between rival gangs.
The huge police operation was mounted after text messages began circulating among the
Sutherland Shire community calling for vigilante responses to target unwelcome visitors
to the popular tourist beach.
The beach has been the scene of two incidents in the past week - an attack on two lifeguards
reportedly by a gang of Middle Eastern youths on Sunday last week and a brawl on Wednesday
in which youths allegedly turned on a media crew.
